How to set up VPS backups (manual and scheduled)
A backup saves you when an update goes wrong or data is lost. Here is how to create manual and scheduled backups of your ComputeBox server, stored off-site.
Backups are the kind of insurance you only appreciate once an update goes wrong, a command deletes too much, or a config change takes the server down. ComputeBox includes backups right in the panel, stored in a separate data center. This guide shows how to set up manual and scheduled backups and how to restore one when it counts.

In short
Check your available backup slots, top up via the wallet if you need more, then create a manual backup or add a schedule in the Backups tab.
A server backup captures the full state of your VM, meaning the system, configuration, and data. If something breaks, you simply restore an earlier state instead of rebuilding everything. The big advantage at ComputeBox: backups are stored off-site in a separate backup data center in Hamburg, away from your server. Even if something happens to the server, your backups are somewhere else.
We currently offer backups for servers in Hamburg. For Bremen they are in preparation.
Whether you can use backups depends on your package. Some packages already include backup slots and storage, others do not, it varies by package. At the top of the Backups tab you can see how many slots and how much storage you have.
If you need more, or your package includes none, unlock both in the Upgrades tab. There you will find two items:
Backup slots define how many backups you can keep at the same time. One slot is one saved state.
Backup storage is the total amount of space available for your backups.
Upgrades are paid exclusively through your project wallet. Top it up once, then you can purchase slots and storage.
How many slots?
Two or three slots are often enough to start, so you keep several states, for example yesterday, last week, and a state from before a major change. More slots mean more restore points.
Switch to the Backups tab. In the Manual Backup section, click Create Backup. ComputeBox then saves the current state of your VM. This is ideal right before you do something risky, such as a large upgrade or a configuration change.
Once the backup is finished, it appears in the Backups list.
Do not rely on remembering to back up manually. In the same tab, under Backup Schedules, use Create Schedule to set one up. ComputeBox then backs up your server automatically at the interval you choose. The number of states kept depends on your slots, older backups drop off once all slots are used.
If something goes wrong, select the right state in the backup list and restore it through the entry's actions. Your server is reset to exactly that point in time.
Restoring overwrites the current state
A restored backup replaces the current state of the VM. Anything created after the backup point is lost. When in doubt, take a fresh manual backup first.
It depends on your package. Some packages already include backup slots and storage, others do not. If you need more, you purchase slots and storage through the wallet, from €0.10 per slot and from €0.10 per 10 GB.
Where are the backups stored?
Off-site in a separate backup data center in Hamburg, away from your server. That way your backups stay safe even if something happens to the server.
How many backups can I keep?
As many as you have slots. One slot equals one saved state, and the storage additionally caps the total size.
